Notable Manuscripts
Schuttern Gospel – Located at the British Library, this gospel book was commissioned by Abbot Bertrich and created by the deacon Liutharius ca. 816-825 at the Benedictine abbey of Schuttern in Germany.
Godescalc Gospel – This lavishly illuminated manuscript was commissioned by Charlemagne and his wife Hildegard and created by Godescalc who used silver and gold on purple-dyed parchment.
Codex Vercellensis – Dating from about the same time as Constantine, the Codex Vercellensis is the oldest surviving copy of the old Latin gospels. This link leads to a spread that contains John 1:1-7, but because of damage, you may only be able read a few words. It’s a tricky one!
